Why was the Youth Service in Warwickshire petition created?

We know how vulnerable young people can be. However, Warwickshire County Council is withdrawing the very service that is proven to work successfully alongside them. We consider that this proposal contradicts the leader of the Council, Councillor Alan Farnell’s claim to protect the most vulnerable and the front-line services that support them, and we are calling for its immediate withdrawal. See the previous wiK article Youth Service Cuts or Read The Coventry Times article

whatsin The Coventry Times - Youth Service Cuts 8 Dec 2010

whatsinKenilworth will report local stories from other sources as they appear in the press. This week has seen the announcement there are possible Youth Centre Cuts.

Extract reads: CAMPAIGNERS outraged at plans to pull the plug on cash for Warwick- shire’s Youth Services have launched a hard-hitting petition, branding the cuts “preposterous.”

Signatures are being collected calling for the immediate withdrawal of the proposal to axe funding for the county’s entire Youth Service — which would see 359 job losses.
No inch of the provision will remain unaffected — with libraries, day centres for the disabled, youth centres, and arts and music services all facing the chop.

One angry petitioner said: “Stop all cuts, make the people who caused this crisis pay
— the rich, and the people who gambled our money. Young people and communities deserve better than cuts.”

Echoing the thoughts of hundreds, another said: “The universal service of youth work is vital to young people, and usually the most vulnerable. - “Good youth work is at the heart of the community, improves lives and life chances, reduces crime, and makes our whole society stronger.”
